Developing a Professional Identity

A few weeks ago, I returned from the annual Innkeeper Conference and Tradeshow sponsored by the Professional Association of Innkeepers International (PAII) in Atlanta, Georgia. Although I’ve been to many conferences in the past, I’ve never seen so much energy and enthusiasm. The bed and breakfast industry has always been a tight community and I was pleasantly surprised to learn how many innkeepers and industry experts already knew about my book, Running a Bed & Breakfast For Dummies. There was an overwhelming, positive response from industry professionals who declared the book, “the most informative and up to date resource on the market!”

The importance of attending a professional industry conference is something that I address in my book for any innkeeper - no matter what stage or level you are at. For those just starting out in the industry, I point out which conferences are worth attending, as well as how to take advantage of the free exchange of knowledge and tips by asking the right questions and looking for certain key patterns and trends in the industry. I also help you to figure out the best way to learn from other innkeepers, including what not to do. If you’re in the middle of your career and need a little boost to increase your business, my book explains why maintaining a visible presence in the industry can be an important factor to ensure the livelihood and success of your inn. Finally, if you’re approaching the end of your career, my book lays out a plan for your future goals. Regardless of what stage you are at, Running a Bed & Breakfast For Dummies is the best resource to find the right networks, professional guidance and associations to put you on the best track to success.
